Florida's Reef Is Dying — Here's the Real Data, and What's Being Done

The Florida Reef Tract — the third-largest barrier reef system on Earth — has lost approximately 95% of its coral cover since the 1970s according to NOAA research data. In 2023–2024, Stony Coral Tissue Loss Disease (SCTLD) devastated what remained in the northern reef zones.

This isn't a projection. This is current reality, measured by the reef monitoring buoys deployed by GARMN (Global Aquatic Resource Management Network) in partnership with the University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine Science.

GARMN's 2025 Rescue a Reef initiative has successfully transplanted 3,200+ coral fragments across 18 sites in Broward and Miami-Dade counties. Survivorship rate: 74% at 12 months — exceeding the national average for coral restoration programs.

How it's funded: 10% of every Luxury Marine Life charter transaction flows directly to GARMN operations. SmartYacht vessel registration fees contribute a per-vessel annual donation. First Look Equities transaction fees fund the GARMN endowment fund — targeting $2M in reserves by Q4 2026.
